About Chiropractic
Taking positive action as soon as possible can allow you to have the knowledge required to make an educated decision in your health or your family’s health. Chiropractic care can provide answers and options for you. We will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have. The spine is made up of vertebrae. The vertebrae house the spinal cord and nerves. Each nerve goes to the different organs in the body. Chiropractors treat subluxations. What is a
subluxation? A subluxation is a misalignment of the
vertebrae. This means that the vertebrae is not in the
proper position. When a subluxation occurs it can cause
the nerve to be obstructed (pinched) which can in turn
cause pain, as well as, the organs The most common conditions a chiropractor treats are:
A note on scoliosis: Scoliosis is curvature of the spine. It is hereditary and can be a crippler of the young, particularly female children. If suspected, please ask for a chiropractic evaluation. Scoliosis is not a curable condition, but regular chiropractic care can help to allow the body to function as well as possible, and in the best scenario can decrease the progression of this crippling condition. Have you ever been in pain and gone to a medical doctor (M.D.) and been told there is nothing wrong with you? This is very common when dealing with spinal injuries. Many people have had this experience. After having x-rays taken patients walk away with a prescription for pain medication and/or muscle relaxers and an explanation from the doctor that they did not find any fractures (broken bones). A chiropractic physician is educated in seeing conditions associated with the spine, whereas a traditional M.D. is not. Both an M.D. and a chiropractic physician can look at the same set of x-rays and assess a totally different opinion of what they see. It is the same concept of, for example, if your car engine is making a terrible noise and not running properly, would you take it to an electronics technician? Certainly not. You would need to take it to a specially trained mechanic so that the problem can be properly assessed and corrected. Pain is a signal from your body that something is wrong. You should listen to your body. Most don't know that pain is the last symptom to arise when there is a spinal problem. Our first goal in treatment is to get you out of pain. Once you are out of pain we can then do more to correct the condition which caused the pain. Chiropractic is a unique field in that you can not always judge your condition by your level of pain. You may have misalignments (vertebrae out of place) without really experiencing pain. So it is very important to have your spine checked at least twice per year even if you are not experiencing any pain, the same way you have a dental check up to prevent any problems which may be occurring before you experience a toothache. The best scenario would be to have your spine checked each month. This is called maintenance and is a method of preventative care. Why wait till you are in pain? Pain is what maintenance prevents, with the exception of an injury. We all do regular maintenance on our vehicles to prevent problems, so why don’t we use this same concept with our bodies? When our bodies are not working properly we then experience pain and we don’t function in our every day activities as well when we are in pain. Pain can make us tend to be a bit "grouchy and irritable" sometimes. Even regular chiropractic care can’t prevent injuries, but it will have your spine in a better position to deal with injury. If the spine is properly aligned and there is then an injury (auto accident, work injury, falls, etc.) you will be better able to recover from that injury. Auto accidents, work injuries, falls, etc. can also cause what is known as soft tissue injuries. Soft tissue injuries involve nerves, muscles, and ligaments. Soft tissue injuries also require specialized treatment and can take a long time to heal depending upon the extent of the injury. When the body receives injury to soft tissues, such as an automobile accident, the muscles tend to lose what is in laymen terms known as "muscle memory". When this happens the muscles lose the conditioning required to function properly. You must then "retrain and recondition" the muscles for proper usage. We can provide you with proper treatment and home instructions to retrain the soft tissues. Is your child involved in sports, cheerleading, or dance? If so, be sure your child is physically able to engage in those activities, add a spinal examination to the annual physical. A sport injury to the spine can take years to produce symptoms. As we age our spine degenerates from regular "wear and usage". Given this fact, add a spinal injury, and in later years results could be much worse. So having a regular spinal check up in most cases can prevent this from happening. Why let a small problem turn into a large problem later in life? Pregnancy can stress your spine and cause spinal problems, so if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant get a chiropractic examination to keep you at your healthiest for you and your baby. Normal Daily activity can cause spinal problems. So don't wait till you feel pain to get checked out by a Chiropractor. Regular Chiropractic care can help prevent future subluxations and pain.
